MICHAEL CARTWRIGHT, Founder and CEO of Foundations Associates
Mr.Cartwright founded, owns and operates three comprehensive treatment facilities for the dual diagnosed, located in Tennessee and California. His unwavering mission to change a system of care is a result of his own adversity. At age 18 Cartwright struggled with co-morbid addictions and psychosis. Mental health workers told him to get sober before they could help and addictions agencies told him he was too mentally ill to benefit. Scared and frustrated, he developed a recovery program through searching for information on "integrating" treatment and committed to establishing a more effective model for others. Cartwright was awarded a grant for an independent three-year efficacy study which led to confirmation of the effectiveness of his model over traditional separate systems, showing substantial decrease in costly emergent care and marked improvements in employment, 12-step attendance, and medication compliance. Since that time, his programs have expanded to a comprehensive continuum of care for people struggling with co-occurrence and educational programs for providers. |
