In the middle school and high school community, substance use is a growing concern. While a survey of 1,875 students showed that most begin trying substances at the age of 14 or 15, some get started as early as age eight. But why do some students begin trying drugs and alcohol at such a young age? According to the same survey, students reported that most first-time users try substances out of curiousity, but the students who keep using drugs and alcohol often do so because of experiencing stress or low self-esteem.
