Reaching the People and Advocating for Dual Diagnosis

Most of the time, dual diagnosis happens in that people living in a community draw their perspective about a certain issue without having much know-how about it. So these people need to be educated about that certain issue in the right direction. The same is the case with the disorders that occur simultaneously. The people who are suffering from dual disorders are mostly deemed inferior. So we need to make people aware of the disorders through systematic public campaigns. Dual Diagnosis centre is already struggling to get better treatment standards for the people who are having co-occurring disorders. We have collaborated with different organizations related to drug abuse, mental health disorders, and many family organizations. This consortium’s main purpose is to entail better treatment services for the people who are fighting with their multiple disorders. Opportunities that the patients have at the moment for recovery are not enough, and they should get more of such opportunities for a better life ahead.

Our Roadmap for Accomplishing This Task Is:

  • To work together with different organizations that are working for the welfare of drug addicts, organizations working for raising mental health awareness among the masses, and the ones who advocate for the consumer rights.
  • Many workshops are also held by us at different places. The reason behind these workshops is to make people aware of the severity of the co-occurring disorders and to answer their concerns about the problem. This can help in addressing the eyewash that the general public has about the simultaneous disorders.
  • To form a team of professionals who can speak in public gathering about the dual disorders and can guide people about what to do and when to do
  • We have also formed an organization by the name of Dual Diagnosis Recovery Group that aims at spreading awareness and providing necessary medical treatment to the masses.
  • We are distributing written material among the people for education purposes.

Dual Diagnosis Networking

Network with community-based mental health, alcohol dependency, state and service provider agencies, and advocacy groups to better understand and address the problems related to substance abuse issues. The advocates put the interests of those who suffer from dual disabilities and their family members at the forefront while addressing the needs of the community organizations.

DDRN will do focus sessions at the neighbourhood level of the organization. The dual treatment groups provide individuals and families with a direction to look for concerns they may face as well as ways to discover tools that support them with the dual disorder they’re both recognize and create. Following the expansion of the treatment access to treatment, patients will also have the ability to form ongoing task groups to continually strengthen and improve person and family rehabilitation and progression services for participants and their client families.

In Dual Diagnosis, the agency, as well as individual citizens and service providers, will work to discover issues linked to dual disorders, and community-based remedies will be provided to those who recognize them. After these participants have completed the project, they will have the option to help keep working on the remaining tasks and improve and heal as they see fit.

The Dual Diagnosis Bureau of Speakers

A focal person or a group of representatives is always good for an organization. DDRN also has a network of speakers that are spread across the whole country. The main aim of this organization is to spread awareness at different levels regarding the dual disorders that the people suffer from—they also aware people of the fact that as the problem is dual, so does the recovery. While recruiting the individuals for the bureau, the experienced persons are given the utmost preference. Most of the speakers are those who have defeated their dual problems. The family members of the patients are also involved. Last but not least are the doctors themselves who guide people about the more technical aspects.

The Dual Diagnosis Recovery Network

DDRN is an organization that is based on national levels, but it has its offices at smaller levels in many states of the country. The aim is the same that has been mentioned before as well. In these offices, all the people related to the dual problems work together to not only make a recovery easy for the patient but they also wage their time in making the opportunities of recovery more and more for the new patients. This, as a whole, has a positive impact on the community.

The offices at the state level are for producing the interaction opportunities for the patients. Through these interactions, they learn many things, like the prevailing medical conditions in their community. The education they get through these interactions is always helpful in the long run. Like with the new information they gain, they spread awareness among the people about the problem they have now, or they had in the past and tried to change the view of the general public about the dual problems that are mostly negative. An awareness program can help in changing that retrospective viewpoint. The interactions result in the formation of communities that raise their voice for the betterment of the healthcare systems that are already working in the community. This is done by getting involved in and starting new campaigns at different levels of the state.

Self-help support groups are also formed for the patients. One of the examples of self-help groups is Dual Recovery Anonymous. The aim of these groups is to make the recovery easier and comfortable for the patient. These groups intend to provide emotional support to the patient so that he can get mixed up with the other members of the group. This will eventually encourage him to share all of his problems. Other members intern will also show him acceptance and will repay the trust he has shown in the best possible manner. Thus the path of the recovery remains smooth. While selecting a support group, you must keep your mental preferences and the group that best suits you. A good group will keep you motivated for the days to come.

following Are the Reasons Why the Support Groups Are Important.

  • It gives the patient a good arrangement where he feels comfortable and spends the time of his recovery in a good manner.
  • Support groups help the people in gaining experience related to their problems. In these groups, different people are present who have been through the same problem. So they educate him and motivate him in tackling the problem.
  • Professionals are also present in these groups. They give the patient the right plan that leads the patient to a quick recovery.

Professionals always stay in quest of finding the new and innovative ways of treating the co-occurring disorders in Dual Diagnosis. By the experiences of the patients who have successfully defeated these dual problems, experts have been able to make a 12 step self-help program that has been termed as Dual Recovery Anonymous. DRA focuses on two main things to end the stigma of drug addiction from the patient. In Dual Diagnosis the first priority is given to the post-treatment programs to prevent a relapse from happening or minimizing its chances to a greater extent. The DRA is best for mental problems as well. Secondly, it focuses on encouraging the patient to adopt a healthy lifestyle to bring positive changes in his lifestyle. Acquiring the membership of the DRA is not much difficult. It only entails two things from a hopeful

  • Firstly he has to show his desire and motivation for leaving the drug.
  • He has to show that he wants to defeat his dual problem that includes drug addiction and a mental problem, in a healthy way.

The members of DRA are always asked to build a strong relationship with each other and provide you with the support. This support can be in any regard that can include support in coping with the substance abuse and tackling the psychiatric illness and also in the form of help by the professional. Religious and spiritual help also play a good role in this regard. The other 12 steps of DRA are different. In DRA, no specific advice is given to the patient for forcing him to do something like it is done in the other programs. One thing that is done is the sharing of experience. The professionals do guide the patient commensurate to their experience and by applying the 12 basic steps in everyday life.

Another phenomenon that is observed in the dual diagnosis network is the double trouble in the recovery. In this method, groups are actually made of men and women who share their experiences in tackling of the addiction. This can motivate all the other members of the group. This phenomenon is to entrench a hope in the patients. This DTR is also for the people who have been diagnosed with dual problems. Most probably, the dual problem includes both the mental illness and the drug addiction. The name is also given, keeping the same thought in the mind. Co-occurring problems can cause more recovery problems, so it is termed as double trouble in the recovery. Dual Diagnosis membership is free of cost and can be availed only if you have the right motivation for defeating your problem.
